Metal Monday: Slipknot to headline two-day festival — Knotfest

Before you get your hopes up too far, Knotfest won’t be coming anywhere near us in the Buckeye State as there are only two dates set and both are about 12 hours away. However, news of the festival is already making waves, and we can only hope the event branches out more in the future.

So what the hell is Knotfest? Well, you may have picked up on that subtle Slipknot reference, but don’t be fooled as there’s an impressive slew of bands on the two-day festival’s lineup including Slipknot (duh), Lamb of God, Deftones, Dethklok,. Now that’s a lineup worthy of attention. To fans, this may seem vaguely familiar to some old tours prevalent around the early to mid 2000s like Ozzfest and even the Sounds of the Underground tour as both featured plenty of extreme and heavy metal and often boasted lineups bolstered by the likes of Slipknot, Lamb of God,  System of a Down and the Deftones.

While those former tours and other similar ones have fallen by the wayside somewhat, Knotfest can’t help but invoke memories of those badass concerts, and I’m sure others share in that nostalgia. Needless to say, I haven’t seen a lineup like this in years, and despite the geographical distance, I’m stoked at the possibility of more Knotfests should this inaugural run go well — after all, the website does reference this as the first annual Knotfest, so we comfortably speculate there will be more in store.

Here’s the whole lineup so far with the exception of regional bands added to each date:

  • Slipknot
  • Lamb of God
  • Deftones
  • Dethklok
  • Serj Tankian
  • Cannibal Corpse
  • Prong
  • Gojira
  • The Dillinger Escape Plan
  • The Urge
  • Dirtfedd

Again, sadly, there are only two dates: Aug. 17 at the Mid America Motorplex in Iowa and Aug. 18 at the Somerset Amphitheater in Wisconsin — only a mere 12 hours away. That’s doable, right? General admission tickets range between about $30 and $50. Here’s a little excerpt from what the website says about the festival:

Knotfest!!! This day of reckoning will be the darkest and the most brutally sinister awakening in heavy music performance history!

An apocalyptic world of fire and madness awaits you as you enter the gates to sinister surprises emanating from around every corner! Be very aware upon entering the grounds that no one is considered safe.Featuring two heavy hitting stages of hard music, this day and night of Knotfest is guaranteed to make your blood pump and your ears bleed.

The big top will be filled with SLIPKNOT memorabilia, interactive art installations and other surprises.

At nightfall, all bets are off! The PAGAN world WILL go off in a riotous mindfuck!

Fire and light WILL blur your senses. You WILL feel and smell the sickness. The smell of KNOTFEST alone WILL cling to your attire for months to come.

Go ahead, take your chances on the RING OF FIRE carnival ride. Destroy your life’s aggression in drum circles with members of Slipknot taking place on mangled frames of forgotten metal.

Leave your official mark on graffiti walls and take your chances walking through the slipknot museum.

An event that will attack all five senses is awaiting you at KNOTFEST 2012.

Sounds like one hell of a good time! Anyone thinking of making drive out there? While you’re contemplating how you’re going to raise the extra money, here’s your dose of Monday metal to remind you what Knotfest has to offer!
