Metal Monday: New Slayer EP on the horizon?
Word is the metal gods of Slayer are planning to release new EP soon to pacify their hungry fans until a full-length album can be completed. Your first thought may, “Jesus, aren’t those guys getting a little old for that shit?” Well, you may be right. With members in their late 40s and early 50s, Slayer is definitely keeping up with aspiring metal bands half their age — but with four times the talent and renown on their side, that may seem a little less insurmountable.
Possibly one of the hardest working bands today, Slayer has been pumping out new material on the reg. And an EP is a smart move in light of their demanding schedule. which features them as one of the top bands on this summer’s Rockstar Mayhem Festival. According to a Nervous Breakdown interview with Dave Lombardo, Slayer already has nine new songs written … so an EP is a smart way for the band to get out some of that new material to the fans while not showing all their guns just yet.
Personally, I have high hopes for the new stuff. Their last full-length World Painted Blood was kind of bland and unimpressive. It was Slayer, sure, but the album featured very few memorable songs and sounded more like a record the band was forced to put out because it was expected of them and less because they were inspired to create new music. Regardless of what the future holds, I’m hopeful the new EP will simply reinforce how relevant the band still is in today’s scene. If the new stuff sounds anything like God Hates Us All, my personal favorite Slayer album of the last decade, I’m sure it will catch fans’ attentions.
